Lucas Davenport has left the BCA. He has no badge, and no authority, but he still carries a gun. He knows that whatever comes next, he'll need it.
What comes next is nothing less than regicide, as good King Duncan has been found dead, stabbed in the night by parties unknown. Duncan's general, Macbeth, is devastated. Duncan's heirs, the main suspects, have fled the country. But is it really that cut-and-dried? Lucas thinks it's all a bit too convenient.
When Macbeth takes the reins of power and declares himself king, things start falling into place, Lucas thinks. But the madness Macbeth had shown at Duncan's death is all too real. A madness that will, in time, be all-consuming. Lucas will need all his intuition and skill to get out alive. And, of course, he'll need that gun.
With the kind of writing that plays both on the heart and the mind, it's no wonder The Glasgow Times says, "I'm not entirely sure what Lucas is doing in medieval Scotland, but the way he handles this tragedy is just plain fun."
